Java was developed by Sun Microsystems in California (by a small team of engineers - the Green Team) in the 1990s. James Gosling is the main initiator of this language project.

"Java" is not an abbreviation of other words - Although there are two theories why it was named Java; one being that programmers drink a lot of coffee, and another that the name could have come from the coffee machine, since it is a household appliance. But

According to Wikipedia the programming language is believed to be named for the aromatic coffee variety, which is grown on the island of Java (Indonesia).

There are over 9 million Java programmers worldwide. Being good at Java pays off many times over - the average annual salary of Java programmers is $97,575.

Computer games like Minecraft and Zuma are written in Java.
